Pingree stands on her integrity, Seacoast Online, 10/20/2010

Democratic Congresswoman Chellie Pingree deserves to be re-elected to her Maine District 1 seat.

We have always appreciated Pingree's candor and her unwavering stances on issues of importance to her. She doesn't recast her position based on political winds or the tempest du jour. What you see is what you get, and for Maine's 1st District residents, that is a firm supporter of health care reform (in fact, she remains firm that the law should have contained a public option provision), climate change legislation (she hasn't changed her opinion that the country should adopt a cap and trade means of reduce carbon emissions) and finance reform. Pingree for 1st District, Bangor Daily News, 10/20/2010

Voters in Maine’s 1st Congressional District may have been surprised when they elected Chellie Pingree to represent them in the U.S. House of Representatives. Instead of a freshman who needed to learn the ropes, they got a representative who hit the ground running on the key issues of the day, and who reflected a progressive approach to problems that plague the troubling economic climate. Rep. Pingree, the Democrat from the Knox County island town of North Haven, deserves to return to Congress. Read more

Pingree for US House, District 1, Portland Phoenix, 10/20/2010

You've got a really clear choice, 1st District voters. A pro-life social-conservative man who is doing his best to distance himself from the tea party, despite sharing many views with that movement. Or a pro-choice progressive woman with the guts, the chops, and the strength to stand up to the radical right and the muddling-middling center-left. It's not much of a choice, really. Add in her anti-war, pro-stimulus, pro-bank-regulation, and pro-health-care stances, and it's an easy decision to vote for Chellie Pingree.

Re-elect Chellie Pingree

The Free Press endorses Democratic incumbent Chellie Pingree to represent Maine’s first congressional district.

Pingree has shown her devotion to small business interests during her career in Maine politics, and has continued to do so at the national level. Her support for legislation that would provide tax incentives for small businesses demonstrates that she understands the important role small business plays in the economy.

In addition, she has fought to reverse the trend of shipping Maine jobs overseas. Communities across the state have been particularly hard-hit by this trend, and Pingree has worked to redevelop towns and cities that have lost key jobs. Among these, revitalizing Biddeford’s mill district and strengthening the role of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard stand out. The recent closure of the Brunswick Naval Air Station was highly detrimental to the surrounding community, which relied heavily on the revenue generated by the Air Station as the major part of the local economy. Pingree has worked to ease the dramatic downturn caused by the closure of the military base. Read more

Successful first term should bring another for Chellie Pingree

Like many of the contests facing voters on Nov. 2, the race between Chellie Pingree and Dean Scontras offers a clear choice. The candidates are far apart on the issues.

We certainly have a preference on this basis. And we believe that the duties of a congressional representatives go far beyond political ideology. They have a responsibility to serve individual citizens, their district and their state.

Chellie Pingree has fulfilled these responsibilities well. She deserves to be re-elected by the voters of Maine’s District 1. Read more

Re-elect Pingree, Michaud

In endorsing Pingree, we find her positions to be more mainstream than those of her 1st District Republican opponent Dean Scontras.

Take Social Security: During their recent half-hour debate on WCSH-TV, Scontras described Social Security as a “glorified Ponzi scheme” — an unfounded comparison to an illegal pyramid scam. Using such loaded language helps to lay the groundwork for the Republicans’ long-held wish to privatize Social Security. Electing Scontras will give Republicans another true believer to push through their “Roadmap for America’s Future,” which includes Rep. Paul Ryan’s pet plan to partially privatize Social Security and turn Medicare into a voucher system.

Pingree, by comparison, in that debate described Social Security as a “vital safety net” with a $2 trillion surplus. She understands the need to reduce the federal deficit, but isn’t willing to scuttle programs that benefit millions of Americans. Nor is she willing to endorse continuing the Bush-era tax cut benefiting those making more than $250,000 a year — in part, because it would add $700 billion to the federal deficit over the next decade.
